Where to buy food in Windhoek

Today I would like to introduce you to a great alternative to go shopping in Windhoek. If you are travelling to Namibia for the first time, you can already prepare a little so that you don't go shopping haphazardly. You always end up buying too much on a spontaneous shopping trip, we all know it!

There is a wide range of different supermarket chains in Namibia, which I can list for you at the end of the post.

Today, however, we are talking about a really great shop that, with a little preparation, is not only better for the environment, but also saves you money and unnecessary food.

I'm talking about the Zero Waste Store. In Germany, these shops are not so untypical anymore, but here in Namibia, unfortunately, they are.

I visited the shop with friends and met the founder Brigitte.

Everything is very clearly laid out and it is not difficult at all. If you need help, just ask the staff and they will help you.

You can buy all kinds of things there, such as noodles, flour, dried fruits and nuts, rusks, tea, coffee, spices, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, toothbrushes, washing-up liquid and much more!

So if you are planning a holiday in Namibia, you might want to pack some cotton bags or tins to stock up on essentials when you get there.

This way you also help the local environment, because plastic and littering are a huge issue here and the less rubbish you leave behind as a tourist, the more you protect our nature.

You can also buy small souvenirs on site, such as soap that is produced locally or self-sewn fabric covers for pots and bowls.

You can also buy refillable water bottles, because here you can drink the tap water, contrary to what some people read.

Of course, there are also supermarkets as we know them in Europe. The most common chains are Spar, Pick'nPay, Checkers and Woermann&Brock. You can usually find them in every city and shop there as usual.

Another tip is to prepare a few recipes that you can prepare quickly and easily on your trip. With these ideas, you can shop much more selectively and don't buy too much.

In the future, I would also like to cook and show camping recipes for you, maybe there is something that will spice up your camping kitchen a bit and that you will like. 😉
